New partnership to provide educational support for Canadian nuclear host group

A week after signing a partnership deal with nuclear supplier companies the Bowmanville-based Canadian Association of Host Nuclear Communities (CANH) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering to enhance collaboration and educational support for nuclear host and potential host communities across Canada.

The agreement marks a “significant step” toward strengthening the resources, expertise, and networks available to municipalities involved in Canada’s nuclear sector, said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster, who chairs the CANH.

“This partnership with UNENE aligns with CANHC’s mission to advocate for the interests of nuclear host communities and provide them with the tools needed to make informed decisions,” Foster noted. “By working together, we can enhance community awareness, education, and engagement, ensuring that local governments and residents have access to reliable information and expertise in the nuclear field.”

Foster said the partnership is about providing educational support for municipalities by leveraging the university network’s research and education capabilities and CANHC’s community engagement expertise.

Both organizations, said university network president Jerry Hopwood, aim to ensure that host and potential host communities are well-informed, well-supported, and well-positioned for success in the nuclear energy and technology fields.

“The collaboration with CANHC allows us to extend the reach of our academic and research network to communities that play a vital role in Canada’s nuclear sector,” said Hopwood. “By sharing knowledge, research, and expertise, we can better support local decision-making and workforce development for a sustainable future.”

The two organizations have agreed to work together to expand educational and research opportunities for nuclear host and potential host communities, facilitate knowledge-sharing and capacity-building initiatives and strengthen connections between municipalities, industry experts, and academic institutions.

The signing of this agreement underscores their shared commitment to ensuring that nuclear host communities are equipped with the necessary knowledge and resources to maximize benefits while addressing challenges associated with nuclear projects.

CANHC and the Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCNI) launched an innovative economic development partnership last week designed to bolster the nuclear energy community.

The two aligned groups agreed to collaborate in connecting OCNI member companies, facilitating economic development connections, event co-hosting and providing access to mutually beneficial programs and services.

Foster called it a “breakthrough agreement.”

“This partnership is about looking to the future and embracing a dynamic approach to economic development in the nuclear energy sector. It’s set to drive sustainable growth, boost community involvement, and forge stronger ties between the industry and our host communities.”

The Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities is a not-for-profit association that supports current, future, and interested nuclear host communities, champions their best interests and fosters an ongoing proactive relationship with the Canadian nuclear industry and regulator.
