A Reddit user recently created much buzz online after he shared his experience of working with a digital marketing start-up based in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. In a recent exchange on the platform, the person revealed that he had joined the company on October 7 as a Business Development Executive. He managed to survive there for just one day, allegedly due to a toxic work environment. He shed light on several unethical practices that forced him to quit the job early. The user made the revelation on the “Indian Workplace” subreddit and his post seemed relatable to many corporate employees who called for the introduction of “strict labour laws.”

On his first day at work, the Redditor was given the responsibility to cold call as many as 500 customers. His shift was also changed abruptly without any prior consultation. When he joined the start-up, the person was told to do the 2 PM-11 PM shift. He, however, was asked to come at 2 PM the next day and stay till 4 AM.

“I joined a digital marketing company on 7th Oct and worked only for 1 day and called the HR next day to tell her that I’m not coming anymore. I was assigned a business development executive post, but the work they gave me on the first day was 500 numbers to cold call and decided to change my work hours from 14:00 – 23:00 to 7 pm to 4 am,” the Redditor wrote.

The person initially “regretted” his decision though he had already started earning as a freelancer. For him, the main reason behind joining the start-up was to gain “corporate experience.” A few weeks later, he got a call from his former Team Leader who said, “Bro, they didn’t give me my salary because I couldn’t achieve the target of $1500 in 30 days.”

“Then I got to know that the agenda of that new startup was to get work done for 1 month and torture employees so that they resign and they don’t need to pay them. The irony is– they were having only 1 client that too of $300,” the Redditor explained in his post.

He further revealed that after quitting the start-up, he was able to earn a more thorough freelancer. “Made twice what they were giving me, though my PG rent got wasted as I only lived there for 5 days and all the expenses of travelling and shifting but I still thank god that I got saved and this made me do hard work even more for myself,” he added.

In the comment box, someone shared, “Bro, I just finished interning for one SaaS start-up and they are withholding my salary for my two months internship as a Business Development Intern. I feel frustrated and a loser.”

Another Redditor revealed that he had faced a similar situation when he started his career. “We joined a company which was operating in a very small area and we were told it was some technical support job. The first day was induction, and they were boasting a lot,” the person explained. Since being shared, the post has already accumulated many upvotes on Reddit.
